My Opinion on the Ford Escape Recall

Last week, Ford recalled more than half million 2001-2004 Escapes because of an ABS wiring problem. When I see dramatic news stories about cars going up in flames due to a defect, I can sympathize with the customer. But, I have to scratch my head about this one.
Why? Chances are that the driver had the ABS light came on weeks before the fire (I could be wrong). I am sure that they thought, “I can take care of that later, after all the car is still running and stopping.”
They just let it go. Not thinking that the ABS system is a critical system, and that the warning light was “some conspiracy to scam them out of money.”
I am not saying that their car burning to the ground is the right punishment. The latest recall just illustrates how numb the motoring public has become to check engine and ABS warning lights.
“Just turn the gas cap a couple of times!” seems to be the refrain from the wannabe car guys. “It is just a way to get you back to the dealer,” is another favorite piece of advice.
Do you think this is a case of ignorance or greed?

Ford Motor Co. is recalling 527,000 Ford Escape crossovers from the 2001-04 model years because the antilock brake system in the small truck can catch on fire.

Missing or incorrectly installed seals on the wiring harness could lead to corrosion when water or road salt gets into an electrical connector, according to a Ford statement. The corrosion could cause the ABS warning light to come on and lead to melting or burning of the electrical ABS connector.
