Bay Area Repair Shops Forced to Relocate

Editor' Note: Many shops have seen their communities grow up around them. Often, shops that have had a downtown location for years are forced out by redevelopment and rezoning. I wonder if the communities realize that an automotive repair shop can give more back to the community than another condo complex or Starbucks.

UNION CITY AUTO SHOPS CAN'T CATCH A BRAKE

UNION CITY, CA— Auto shop owners being displaced from Union Square are nearly out of time and real estate options to stay in Union City.

The eight shops — a majority of the city's automotive repair businesses — must be shuttered by Feb. 28, as housing developer AvalonBay Communities begins building two apartment structures on the site it owns adjacent to the BART station.
