Scan Tools: What do you use?
Lets face it, computers are getting cheaper every day. For Christmas I bought myself a laptop computer for $700 that had a 17-inch screen and mid-range processor. Part of my motivation was to try out new scan tool diagnostic software. Don't get me wrong, I own a dedicated scan tool that has been great. It boots up fast, it is rugged and has great software. I have no complaints about it. But, my eyes have been wondering…
I have been seeing a lot of Bluetooth enabled automotive diagnostic tools on the market like these: link, link, link. While these tools are not from mainstream diagnostic tool manufacturers, they do look ready for prime time. But, the software still has me asking the question if they can support the pro technician with the information updates they need to make a living.
But, mainstream information companies are catching on to the trend. Instead on developing stand alone tools and platforms they are seeing the value of using off-the-shelve PCs. Snap-on (they own Mitchell1) and Delphi are using this approach and showed the technology at the SEMA and AAPEX shows in Las Vegas this year. So there might be something to this PC thing….
I am ordering a Bluetooth OBDII connector on Friday, I will keep you posted.
Anybody have a suggestion? please leave a comment.
